Egypt

So the great adventure began with us waiting in the airport for twelve hours, yes we were worried about driving somewhere we had never been in the dark, but it ended up okay we all got some sleep and we all had fun joking around.
Once we got to Egypt we had to take a bus ride to Cairo it was three hours, which most of us slept. We then went to the Sphinx light and history show that night. We started the tour on Wednesday, it started with seeing the Cairo Museum, which was nice, but really crowded, after the museum we headed to the to the Papyrus museum where we were taught how to make papyrus paper. We then head to the Pyramids of Giza, they were so beautiful. I was so excited when we got there. I actually was able to walk on the Pyramid of Giza and get my picture taken on it. The pictures I got of it do not do it justice. We wrapped up our day heading to the Khan el-Khalili Bazaar. We were all so excited to be able to walk around and shop in the open air market. We were waked around with an armed guard; it kind of felt like being herded like cattle, but it was so much fun.
The next day we had off in Cairo so all of us went back to the bazaar, which was fun, this was the place where I was able to get all my souvenirs. After a long day of shopping where headed back to the Hotel to have some dinner and get cleaned up. After that we headed to the ballet to see the Nutcracker. It was so great to have great friends and to get to see something that reminded me of home.
On Christmas Eve we headed to Alexandria were we toured all day. The drive took us four hours because of the fog, but we were happy with the drive since we saw over nine car accidents on the way, but we were lucky to not have one. Once in Alexandria we headed to the catacomb, then to the roman theater, after that to see the a few more land marks. The day was long so all of us were pretty happy to be back at the hotel once we got there.
On Christmas Day the small group of us headed to the Alexandria Library the Largest Library in the world. It was a great time we walked the whole way there, after visiting we went to a show at the planetarium. After the show we walked back to the hotel, did a little more shopping on the way, once at the hotel we again freshen up and then headed to dinner. We were lucky to find a place that was having a special Christmas dinner. So we ended up having a four course dinner that night with Cream of Mushroom soup, pastier with chicken sauce, roasted turkey and a chocolate Yule log for dessert. After dinner we head back stuffed and packed to head back home.
We headed home on the 26th of December, I was lucky and got back to my house by 11:00 pm. I was able to unpack and then shower before I headed to bed. I have posted a slide show of some of the pictures from Egypt I hope you all enjoy.

Dubai

Wow what a day. I wasn’t expecting to get up and head to Dubai today. I was actually thinking that I would end up here sitting all day watching tv. However that is not the case. At about 11:00 am, my neighbor decided that we needed to go to Dubai. Well we were off.
We started the day at the Dubai Mall largest mall in the world, but a great mall. I got to see the Aquarium, where there were divers and a shark, and I also got some Garrets popcorn.  I finally got to see Christmas decorations up at stores; it was kind of like being home but without the snow. We did a little shopping and tried to get to see the fountains, but they were not running the normal times due to it being a holy day. I was able to see the tallest building in the world. It was such a sight to see, I was amazed at the architecture and the sight of it. We then walked around the mall a while longer and head out.
This is where my fun of the day really started. Thanks to my neighbor we stopped at a pet store to look at a cat that she was hopping was there. Well we got in there and I was looking around and I ended up falling in love with an animal myself. So I bought all the things that I need and we headed home. It was an interesting car ride with her in a box, but we made it the two hours and she was safe. When I got home I was able to set up her cage and let her out of the box. She got away from me and took flight for a little while, however she is now safely in her cage and I can welcome Mac to my family over here.
I think that she is finally calming down and welcoming her new home. She is singing to me at this time and it is great to have.

The Quick update

Well just a quick update for those who don’t have facebook. This week came and went really fast and with it came some great hassles. We had tons of testing to do in the classroom, I love testing. Well it wasn’t as bad as I thought, however when it came to the mapping we had to do with the testing it was a pain.
Outside of school well that was a different story; things were going well until someone decided to back into my car. Yeah I was at a complete stop, parked in a parking stall and someone backs up and hits me. There was damage to the light, trunk and bumper. I ended up having to wait an hour for the cops to come so that I wouldn’t end up paying for it.
On the upside I got my first Christmas card this week too. I was so excited to see one, thank you Aunt Marilyn. I also broke down and bought the Digital Satellite box, so I now have TV. I am kind of happy I did, it is nice to watch something I don’t own or haven’t seen in a while.

We headed to Morune Dune for something to do, while my house was cleaned today. I got some great pictures and had an amazing time. The four of us packed a lunch and headed out to see the dune. It was laughing and fun the whole time.

National Day Celebration and Parade

So this week has been a week of fun and events. School was only normal for one day, which was Sunday. On Monday we started the week of activities with our National Day Celebration. Let me explain that National Day here is like the Fourth of July for us, except they didn’t win a war. National Day is the day the UAE was founded 39 years ago, yeah the country is that young. Anyways back to the events of the week, our national day celebration was a long one for the kids. We didn’t teach classes that morning since we knew the celebration was going to start at about 9:00. So at about 8:30 they gathered all the students and made sure that they were ready to line up and sit down. It would have been great had the celebration started on time, however it didn’t so we just went with the flow. The celebration finally started at about 11:00, at this time we watch the student demonstrate traditional dance, games, and rituals. They also then went on to show what the UAE is doing today to become more modern. It was great fun.
Yesterday we came to school being told that there would be no teaching for the next two days. We were like okay let’s have fun. So Gayle and I cleaned our rooms and worked on paperwork finally. The students just played in the courtyard. At about 8:30 they lined the students up and put them on the bus. We where head to the parade, which the students were walking in. We were told we could walk with the students if we would like. However we decided to walk in front and see more of the parade. I was quite a sight to see. The Emirates had painted their cars, horse where brought out, and the finest cloths on the girls, after the parade back to school to get the students on the bus to go home.
Today is not much different only about twenty students showed up at school, I am sitting here working on lesson plans which I have finished and not typing this. The students were sent home only 30 minutes after they got here. I just have to wait to be told I can head home. Tomorrow I am having a BBQ party at my house, which should be fun and then we are going to head to the roof of the building to watch the firework and the festivities in town.

Thanksgiving Away from Home

Well for my second Thanksgiving away from home ever, it was an okay. I was lucky to spend the time with some great new friends, friends that are starting to feel like family. The day started out better than I thought since I was able to stay home and cook most the day, even though I was supposed to be in bed for the day with my back. However I ended up resting for half the day and cooking the rest. I am glad to say that my Thanksgiving was not without one of my family’s favorite food, Cream cheese Mash Potatoes. All my cousins should be proud since I brought them with me. I also end up making an Apple crisp, which I got three requests to make for people.
We gathered at about 6:30 here, since most teachers had to work. It was a great turn out and we filled the hall on the first floor. We ate and talked for a good three hours with everyone, than all headed back to our apartments to sleep off you turkey dinner.
I did come to the conclusion that there were two things I really missed, besides my family. One was the Thanksgiving Day Parade, First time I have not been able to watch it, second was going to a movie with my cousins after lunch. I will be looking forward to those and my family the next time I am home.

Eid Break

I am finally on break. The last week of school was really different. At school they held a Haja program for the students and the parents. This program was interesting for me to watch, it was the students reenacting the trip to Mecca. After that the students were able to have a free day the rest of the day, which made my life so easy.
Break has now officially started, which has been a great time relaxing and getting work done for school. I have spent the first three days of my break just working on lesson plans for the rest of this term. I was also able to plan my vacation for Christmas; I am excited to say I am going to Egypt. If you want to see here is the itinerary: http://holidays.airarabia.com/aaholidays-ibe-web/public/ShowPackageDetails.do?hdnPackageref=PKGSHJALY0003&hdnPrevPage=14. I am looking forward to getting out of dodge for a little while, if only for a week. I am so excited to be going to see the pyramids, catacombs, Montazah Gardens, Kayed Bay and Citedell in Alexandria.
The Desert Safari, oh it was a great day. It started like a normal day off, I watched some Sex and the City and after a few shows I headed into AD. Once there I came to find out that my camera was over heating, which means one of two things either bad camera or bad battery. Well shortly thereafter the camera shut off for good, so I had to get a new camera. We were picked up at 3:00 pm and taking to the desert where we visited a camel farm to start and were able to pet a camel. After that we headed farther into the desert where we did some dune bashing. It was so much fun; it was like being on a rollercoaster. The only difference was there where times we were going to flip over, but we didn’t. After finishing dune bashing the group was dropped off at the camp where we would have dinner and relax.
At camp, it was so nice and relaxing, started with a camel ride, which was so awsome. Then headed into the came and got some henna done, which I love. Then just kind of relaxed and watch the sun set over the dunes. The others tried some Shisha, I took a picture like it but didn’t do it. After that I watched Gayle do some sand surfing, and then we had dinner. It was a great dinner, which included lamb cabob, lamb chops, chicken cabob, rice, and humus for me, And YES I ATE IT ALL. After that we finished the evening watching the stars before heading back to AD.

Moreeb Dune & Abu Dhabi

Oh what a weekend, I am glad to say that this weekend has turned out to be one of the better weekends I have had here in the UAE. When school end on Thursday, I thought oh the girls and I will head into AD (Abu Dhabi) do our shopping and then head home, and spend the rest of the weekend working on school stuff. Was I wrong, well kind of wrong. The girls and I did end up heading into AD after school on Thursday, where I was able to get some much need décor for my apartment, a lamp for my side table, and some lamp shades for my light bulbs that hang from my ceiling. Got back from there at about 11:00 pm and then did some laundry and cleaned my house. Good productive day.
Got up on Friday thinking well I guess I will get to work on some school stuff, which I did. I got about half way through when my door bell rang. Stacy my next door neighbor wanted to know if I wanted to run to the store with her, I said sure and we were off. Well half way to the store she asked if I would like to see the Moreeb Dune. I was excited since I hadn’t gotten to see it yet. So we headed down to the dune. After getting lost for about 30 minutes, we finally found the way there. It was the most beautiful thing I have seen. The trip there was great we so such beautiful site, words and pictures cannot describe what we saw. At one point we had a wild heard of camels that was running along the car. It was so great to see. Once we got to the dune, it was nothing like I had seen before; here is this pile of sand that is as tall and steep as a small mountain. Looking up it you could see where people tried to climb it and where four wheelers had made it up the side. After that we headed back to the apartments where I worked on finishing up my lesson plans and then finished my Christmas Cards. So those will be mailed off this week, in hopes they get there, before Christmas.
Oh what a day on Saturday, I can’t say that I did a lot, but it feels like I did. Stacy and I headed into AD for the day the day to get tons of earns done. We headed to the Abu Dhabi mall to start. I ended up buys three shirt and two sweaters. I was not thinking I was going to buy clothes today. After that we ate some India food and then head out to Al Wada Mall, here we had went to LuLu’s, which I have to say is a great store. We headed to Spinney’s after that to get some foods that I can’t find anywhere else. Finally we head out to the Dania Mall and hit Home Center and Carrefour. We got back about an hour ago and I am completely wiped out. Until next time.

Moving In

So this has been a week of moving into the apartments after school. It started with cleaning the place on Tuesday after I got the key. That was a good two hours of work, also that night I got  my rugs in and my dinner room table, wardrobe, and coffee table delivered. It was a long night since the guys came out here at nine at night to deliver then stayed to put it together. He was here until about midnight putting it together and then he headed off on foot, back to the store.
Wednesday was when another big chunk of the furniture came in. That night we had my stove, ridge, and couches delivered. I was lucky enough to find an electric stove out here so I don’t have to worry about hooking up the gas line. I also started moving in the things from the hotel. I figured the more I moved during the week the better it was once the big move came. Oh also at school on Wednesday my student preformed for the morning celebration they call it. We did the classic head, shoulders, knees and toes. It actually went really well, I think that the teachers were really surprised to see me standing there performing with my students.
Thursday, last day of classes, went fast it seemed I think since I was ready to get to the apartment and get everything moved. I was really surprised that everything came Thursday night. My bedroom set, washer, TV, desk, and chair. It took a while, but Home Centre where I got most of it from where good and got everything put together without a problem. I also had my first home cooked meal in two months. It was great, yes I made pasta, but it was some of the best pasta I have had. After that I end up taking Gayle to the hospital, since she cut her hand open, two stitches, but it was still bad. I also found out that the DVD player that the guys at Carrefour told me would work didn’t, so off to get a different one.
Friday, everything is out of the hotel and I am checked out. I am officially moved into my apartment and now living here full time. Gayle and I started the morning moving everything into our places and then headed to Mustsaffa Carrefour to get some things we needed. It was a nice trip and I ended up getting almost everything that I had on my list, the only thing I still need to find is cookie sheets, so I can bake chicken nuggets (although I am thinking about getting a deep fryer). After getting back from Carrefour, where I got another DVD player which works this time, I ended up being able to unpack all but one of the suitcases I brought and the one that I didn’t unpack is all school stuff in it. I will probably be going through it tomorrow for idea when I am writing my lesson plans. Then we headed back out to the industrial area to show another teacher where the place where to get some good cheap furniture and rugs. Now I am back in my place and about to go had some ice cream so until next time.

Final Got my Key

Well the day has finally came I got my key today, however I should back up to the last few days. School has been going so well. I feel like things have turned around with the students, which makes me happy. I still have to yell a little, but nowhere near to where I had been. My class is doing great with centers and with working through their letter, so I do feel like I am made some progress with my students. So school has been getting better, I think everyone is right everyday it should get better and better. Next week my faculty head and I are looking at putting permanent centers in my room. I think that this will be a great thing for the students and make it easier for me to work with small groups.
Now on to the rest of my day, after school we headed to get our laundry, we headed to the mall for lunch and I walked into a door and spraining my wrist, (yes I know my friends are going oh that is Julie). After that all that we were able to come back to the hotel to find out that the keys to our Apartments where here. I was so excited that a small group of us headed into M-Zayed to see them. I love my place. I have a nice side two bedroom. It has a smaller kitchen, but I can still cook in it. I will be heading up there tomorrow to sweep and mop the floors. After that I will lay out the two rugs I already have, but I have decided I need to get at least two more, maybe three. Then we are heading to the industrial area to get out appliances.
My bedroom set will be here on Thursday, which I am excited about. That means that this weekend I will be unpacking all of my trunks and my clothes. I am hoping to have internet in the apartment, before this weekend, but I don’t know if that will happen. So I may be off line for a while, once I have to move out. I am hopefully out of the hotel on Saturday.
